In just a few months, SN1, The newly redesigned SpaceX spacecraft prototype could make a test flight soon. According to Elon Musk, it could be a matter of a few months.
SN1 is the latest starship design after the first prototype blew it’s top in November of 2019.
On December 27th, Musk Tweeted, “We’re now building flight design of Starship SN1, but each SN will have at least minor improvements, at least through SN20 or so of Starship V1.0”. And then on December 30th, Musk Tweeted that the Starship has a giant dome.
First up though will be the Crew Dragon, which has to go through an emergency-escape system test on January 11th. As I wrote earlier, if that’s successful a manned crew could be space-bound later this year.
The Starship will be something to see in its final form. Starship and Super Heavy, a giant rocket, will be 165 feet tall. Both will be reusable, cutting down on costs of spaceflights and making going to Mars on a regular basis much cheaper, Musk has said.
Reps from SpaceX have said that the first operational Starship flights will bring commercial communications satellites to space, as early as 2021. The first crewed Starship mission will be manned by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa. He’ll be taking an around-the-moon voyage on the craft sometime in 2023.
